Top 5 Reasons Fitness Resolutions Fail – And What to Do Instead!
The New Year is a wonderful time to take stock of what changes we need to make in order to be the best versions of ourselves. It’s no secret that one of the most popular intentions made in the new year is to take better care of our health and wellness and to make exercise a priority. We’ve outlined the top 5 reasons people struggle to follow through and what to do about it!
#1 Lack of a plan
Lets face it—the gym can be an intimidating place for most people and if you don’t have a solid plan it can lead to frustration. The Solution: At 760 Fitness we want you to feel comfortable and prepared each time you come in so we offer each member a free 30 minute personal training sessions. They can help
you with a plan of action based on your goals and get you on the right track for long term success!
#2 The ‘Why’ has not been identified
When deciding to make a change its important to identify WHY its important to make the change. If there is not a strong enough why it is easy to slip back into old habits and put off the change for a later date. The Solution: Make a list of how you will feel and what could improve in your life through making your health a priority. For example: more energy, less stress, pain management, more confidence. Take the time to really envision how this would make you feel and let yourself get excited about it!
#3 ‘Life’ gets in the way
In our fast pace, often demanding every day lives its easy to justify skipping workouts and putting it off for ‘tomorrow’ The Solution: Identify the least hectic time in your daily schedule and block out that time for your workouts; even if that is only 30 minutes. Let friends and family members know this is
your time and you would appreciate their support in keeping that dedicated time for your health. This helps create much needed accountability when establishing a new routine.
#4 You change but your environment does not
Being a personal trainer for over ten years I have seen many instances where an individual decides to make a healthy change but their close friends or family members (often unconsciously) do not support that. Sometimes it feels like a ‘threat’ to those around that this person is improving without them.
The Solution: Aim to gently inspire those around you. This could look like researching healthier versions of the family favorites together or anchoring healthy habits with a reward, such as after taking a family walk you watch your favorite show together. Don’t be shy about asking your family for support in changes that can benefit all!
#5 Falling into the ‘all or nothing’ mindset
We love to see individuals excited to make a change, however, often times this leads to a sprint right out of the gate! This can lead to extreme muscle soreness or overwhelm from trying to change everything all at once. When this is their experience it can lead to a negative relationship with exercise or healthy food changes.
The Solution:
Make smaller changes gradually. For example, deciding to workout 3 times a week for 30 minutes in the beginning and listening to how your body is feeling before adding more. If you feel like you need a few days of, or even a week, give your self the grace and understanding and take that time. The same goes for nutrition. Identify the biggest ‘red flag’ habit and decide to be more intentional at improving that habit before gradually working on other. A red flag habit could be cutting the days per week you eat fast food or decreasing the amount of sugar and cream in your morning coffee. Bottom line is there is a solution for each obstacle if you make yourself and your health a property.
You are worth taking care of!
